Do you need to seal your stone?

It depends on the stone. Natural stones absorb liquids at very different rates, so porosity, finish and where the surface is used all matter. A porous marble benchtop and a very dense granite will not need the same approach, and some surfaces may not need sealing at all.

A quality penetrating sealer soaks into porous stone and slows how quickly water, oil and everyday spills are absorbed, giving you more time to wipe them away. The goal on this page is simple: help you work out whether your stone benefits from sealing, then point you to the right Aqua Mix product.

What sealing can and cannot do

Sealing helps reduce the absorption of liquids and contaminants and gives you more time to clean spills. It does not make natural stone stain-proof, and it does not prevent acid etching or surface wear on acid-sensitive stone such as marble and limestone.

  • Sealing helps
  • Reduce liquid and oil absorption
  • Give more time to clean spills
  • Lower the risk of staining
  • Make everyday cleaning easier
  • Sealing does not
  • Make stone completely stain-proof
  • Prevent acid etching
  • Prevent surface wear
  • Replace prompt spill clean-up

Always use suitable pH-neutral cleaning products on marble and other acid-sensitive natural stones, and wipe up oil, coffee, wine and sauces as soon as possible.

Material guidance

Does your stone need sealing?

A general guide by material. Natural stone varies from slab to slab, so treat this as a starting point and always test your specific stone and finish before sealing.

Material Guidance Notes
Marble Usually Recommended Commonly sealed on benchtops, vanities, floors and wet areas. Sealing helps reduce absorption but does not prevent acid etching.
Travertine Recommended Natural look; solvent-based
Limestone Recommended Porosity can vary considerably. Test the specific stone and finish.
Granite Depends Some granites are very dense and absorb little; test before sealing.
Quartzite Depends Porosity varies between stones and finishes; test before selecting a sealer.
Terrazzo Recommended Assess the exact terrazzo system, finish and manufacturer requirements.
Porcelain Grout / Finish-Specific Many porcelain surfaces are low-porosity; assess the tile finish and grout rather than applying a blanket rule.
When in doubt, do a simple absorption test on a clean, dry, inconspicuous area, or bring your details into the showroom and we will help you decide.

Application

How to seal natural stone

A general five-step approach. Application methods and cure times vary by product, so always follow the current Aqua Mix instructions and Technical Data Sheet for your chosen sealer.

step 01

Test first

Test the chosen sealer on a small inconspicuous area and confirm the result.

step 02

Clean & dry

The surface must be clean and completely dry before application.

step 03

Apply evenly

Apply the product evenly using the method specified for that Aqua Mix sealer.

step 04

Allow penetration

Keep the surface appropriately wet for the penetration time stated on the product instructions.

step 05

Remove all excess

Wipe the surface completely dry so no excess is left to cure on the surface. Follow product-specific cure times.
