What is zero silica?

You're planning a kitchen renovation, and suddenly you become aware that everyone's talking about engineered stone bans and something called "zero silica." It's enough to make your head spin. But the answer to “What is zero silica?” isn't as complicated as it sounds.

Zero silica engineered stone that doesn't contain any crystalline silica. A safer alternative to traditional quartz surfaces, it still gives you that sleek, consistent look you're after for jawdropping interiors.

WHY ZERO SILICA MATTERS

Traditional engineered stone contains high levels of crystalline silica - often 90% or more. When cut or ground, this creates dangerous dust that can cause silicosis, a serious lung disease affecting tradies and fabricators. Zero silica stone eliminates this risk entirely by using alternative binding agents and fillers instead.

From our experience at Attila, we've seen growing demand for safer alternatives as awareness of these health risks has increased. That's exactly why we've added silica-free quartz to our collection.

THE BENEFITS OF SILICA-FREE BENCHTOPS

Health and Safety First

The primary advantage is obvious - no health risks for the people cutting and installing your benchtops. This peace of mind is invaluable, especially after everything we've learned about the dark side of engineered stone.

Maintenance-Free Living

Unlike natural stone, silica-free quartz doesn't need sealing or ongoing maintenance. It's a basic, practical material that delivers the quartz aesthetic without the fuss.

Competitive Pricing

Here's something most people don't expect - our zero-silica stone is competitively priced at the same level as natural stone. We offer wholesale prices direct to the public, making it an affordable surface option.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM ZERO SILICA STONE

Appearance Options

Our silica-free quartz comes in polished and honed finishes across a range of colours including black, white, beige, gold, brown, charcoal, and green. The closer to pure white, the higher the quality and price point.

Practical Applications

It's perfect for kitchen benches, laundry surfaces, or bar tops and available in 20mm.

Important Limitations

Like traditional quartz, zero-silica stone can't handle direct heat from pots and pans. It's also not UV resistant, so outdoor applications are off the table. We don't recommend using it as splashbacks unless there's adequate distance from the stove. However, it’s still a wonderfully functional and versatile offering that can look great in many areas of your home.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT ALTERNATIVE

When we talk to customers about alternatives to engineered stone benchtops, we often mention zero-silica options as a viable middle ground. They offer the consistent look of engineered stone without the health concerns.

However, it's worth noting that while zero silica stone solves the health problem, it's still a manufactured product. Many of our customers ultimately choose natural stone for its unique character and proven track record. When making the choice, it all comes down to your specific tastes and project needs.
