What is Terrazzo?

You've probably spotted it in cafés, upscale hotels, your Instagram feed or maybe in your friend's recent kitchen renovation. Terrazzo is massively popular in Australian design circles these days, and we love that. As Melbourne's premier natural stone specialists, we've watched terrazzo transform from an old-world classic to the darling of contemporary design. Here’s what you need to know about this beautiful natural stone.

WHAT IS TERRAZZO EXACTLY?

Think of this stone as the original upcycled material. It’s a smart composite product created by embedding chips of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or other materials into a cement or resin base. After setting, it's ground down and polished to reveal a smooth surface. Terrazzo features distinctive flecks and fragments that give each piece its unique character.

While terrazzo’s roots lie in ancient Egyptian mosaics, this type of stone really took off in Italy in the 15th century when it was used to avoid wasting stone offcuts. When you think about it, it  is a truly sustainable solution.

WHAT IS TERRAZZO MADE FROM?

The foundation of terrazzo starts with either:

  • A cement base (traditional and incredibly durable) that works beautifully for flooring.
  • An epoxy resin base (modern and more flexible) that's super smooth and perfect for thinner applications.

Then comes the fun part — the aggregate mix. This typically includes:

  • Marble chips that bring those classic white and grey swirls to the party.
  • Granite pieces that add depth with their flecks of black, pink, and grey..
  • Quartz fragments to boost durability while offering colour versatility.
  • Glass bits that can introduce bold pops of colour you simply can't get naturally.
  • Sometimes even mother of pearl or metal fragments are added to some terrazzo tiles for spaces that deserve an extra bit of sparkle.

We've helped many Melbourne homeowners create custom terrazzo blends, and can tell you that no two mixes ever turn out exactly the same.

BEST USES FOR TERRAZZO TILES

Where does terrazzo really shine? Almost anywhere:

  • Flooring that needs to handle heavy foot traffic without looking tired after a few years.
  • Kitchen splashbacks that can take a beating from cooking splatters while looking fantastic.
  • Bathroom walls that stand up to moisture while adding serious style points.
  • Statement walls that have guests asking, “Where did you find that?”
  • Countertops that don't flinch when met with hot coffee cups or wine spills.

We recently supplied terrazzo flooring for a busy café in Fitzroy that sees hundreds of visitors daily. The owner called us six months in to say it still looks brand new despite constant coffee drips and chair scrapes. That's the kind of real-world performance we love to hear about.

BENEFITS OF CHOOSING TERRAZZO

Why are our clients increasingly choosing terrazzo and loving it? Let’s count the ways:

  • This stone lasts a very long time. We've seen terrazzo floors in heritage Melbourne buildings that are 50+ years old and still going strong.
  • Incredibly versatile – when clients come to us and worry about getting the right balance between their aesthetic ideas and practical needs, terrazzo perfectly bridges the gap.
  • It's surprisingly low maintenance.
  • Modern installation techniques can create nearly seamless surfaces without noticeable grout lines.
  • For our eco-conscious clients, terrazzo incorporates recycled materials.
  • It's non-porous when sealed properly, making it hygienic for food prep areas and bathrooms.
