To ensure optimum protection, ease of maintenance and the longevity of your stone we recommend using a high quality impregnating sealer.

There are 3 types of sealers widely available on the Australian market.

1) A surface (or topical) sealer like the one available at many warehouse retail stores. These sealers only cover the surface of the stone, but do not penetrate them by absorbing into the pores of the stone. Therefore they do not provide a sustainable form of protection, and need to be reapplied every 6 months.

2) A penetrating sealer only absorbs into the surrounding area of the stone’s pores, and with time, eventually fades out.

3) A high quality impregnating sealers on the other hand chemically bonds with the pores in the stone, essentially becoming a physical part of it. I’m often asked by clients how often sealer needs to be applied? How long do they last?. The astonishing answer is – a high quality impregnating sealer only needs to be applied once every 20 years.

A high quality impregnating sealer provides superior protection against oil and water stains. Because impregnating sealers provide a deeper penetration they prevent common problems such as, efflorescence, salt spalling, freeze-thaw, corrosion, spalling, and picture framing.

Sealers can be used for both indoor and outdoor use on residential and commercial projects on floors, patios, entertaining areas, facades, cladding, pool surrounds, and walls.

Impregnating sealers such as Dry Treat can even withstand commercial cleaning techniques e.g. high pressure hosing. They will not change or discolour your stone in any way, shape, or form.

Why use natural stone for your pool copping and surroundings?

What is pool copping?

Pool copping refers to the boundary edge surrounding the swimming pool, which is usually placed around the top edge of the pool. By placing coping tiles around the pool both the structure and the surrounding areas are protected from water damage.

A wide variety of natural stone can be used as pool coping, these include: travertine, dolomite, and marble. Natural stone provides an aesthetically elegant character to your pool design.

The stone’s heat resistance is important factor to consider when selecting natural stone pool coping. Some types of stone material can absorb an immense amount of heat (such as volcanic rock like Bluestone and Granite), which may create an unpleasant experience when exiting the pool. As a general guide, marble, travertine, and dolomite are inherently heat resistant.

From a design perspective bluestone provides a very sleek modern look, and comes in an array of colours ranging from light grey (in its original sawn cut form) to a minimalist black appearance.

Attila’s Stone recommends a brushed finish. A brushed finish involves dipping the natural stone in commercial acid and then metal brushing, creating a leather-like texture. A brushed finish significantly reduces the slipperiness of stone.

To protect your stone and increase its longevity we recommend using a high impregnating sealer such as SK40. For best results allow the sealant to dry for a period of time (ideally 6 weeks).

Why use marble in your family home?

A popular form of natural stone is the Marble, which comes in a multitude of colours, and distinguishable from other types of natural stone by the striking veins that run through it.

For centuries past and up until the present day marble is heralded as a symbol of luxuriousness. Because of its timeless style many architects and designers often specify it. Depending on its finish, marble can be used internally and externally. It is well documented that properties that use marble have a substantially higher market value.

There is a widely held misguided belief that marble is a highly porous material, this however, is not the case. Like many natural occurring materials (such as gold, silver, and diamonds) there are different grades of quality that distinguish their strength and durability. The strength or density of a stone is largely determined by where and what part of the quarry the stone is extracted from. As a general guide, marble can be classified as low density (soft) and high-density marble (hard). A high-density marble makes the stone less likely to scratch or chip. Also, high-density marble is often less porous, meaning that it is less likely to stain. (see section on sealing).

There is common expression amongst natural stone experts that ‘not all marbles are created equal’. I think it’s important to consider the reasons why this occurs more deeply. A disparity in natural stone quality is often caused by cutting corners in the ‘manufacturing, fabrication, and logistical distribution’ of natural stone. In a recent study, it was found that natural stone manufactured in some parts of the world often use sewer water to cut the stone. This procedure interferes with the natural minerals in the stone, often causing it to rust. A common problem occurring with natural stone tiles are often not calibrated properly, resulting in a substandard uneven tile often causing endless maintenance problems. Attila’s Natural Stone & Tiles ensure that all natural stone tiles go through quality assurance. All tiles are laser cut and calibrated to international standards, therefor only minimal grout and some cases no grout is required.

Another major benefit of selecting natural stone is its durability. Natural stone will retain its look over time without succumbing to colour discolouration.
